DAY 1: The New Job!

Today marks "Day 1" of the new job! While the work day was short, it was a wonderful day. It is incredibly exciting to start something "new" when you enjoy what you are starting.
Every day I will have the opportunity to go to work and continually grow in relationships with my co-workers like a normal job, but most importantly (and the reason as to why I choose this job) I have the opportunity and capability to work with people who are not healthy, have no fitness and want to give themselves a better LIFE! There will be people who I will work with who are healthy and have their fitness at a certain level - it will be great to support their goals and teach them new things, but it is the "overweight" and "obese" culture in America, in the South, that I can really help. Did you know that almost 70% of Americans are OVERWEIGHT! From that 70%, 30% of those people believe that they are "normal." For them to think that they are okay in their weight is communicating that there is an image issue in America. Normal in America is overweight - is that what we want? What breaks my heart the most is the fact that almost 20% of elementary age children are obese - that's not even including the overweight percentage.  If adults cannot make the healthy choices to avoid this issue, to change the way America understands health & fitness, then what is going to happen to these children? Do we want the next generation to have the list below by the fun age of 20?!
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack/heart failure
  • Cancer
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Gout a kid of arthrities that occurs when uric acid builds up in the joints. Acute gout is a painful condition that typically affects one joint.
  • Osteoarthritis

Deep aching joint pain that gets worse
after exercise or putting weight on it
  • Sleep apnea a common disorder in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep - notice that is defined with COMMON :(
I have the opportunity to work with people every day and show them their current personal "health & fitness" and their future - negative and positive. I have the opportunity to work with them to establish goals for their health, weight and strength. Exercise programs, nutrition and encouragement are going to help these people avoid health issues that will cost thousands of dollars, costly injuries because they are overweight and then show them how life can be better (honestly, less expensive and longer) at a healthier size!
My fitness, nutrition and science training comes from ISSA, the International Sports & Science Association. It is amazing to have the education in this specific knowledge. I am very blessed to have the opportunity to use my training at Gold's Gym and I look forward to RESHAPING the Southland!

For those of you who are already content with your physical condition, yeah, congratulations! You are part of a small percentage and I encourage you to continue making "fitness and nutrition" a habit! Ladies: If you are ever looking for something fun online I like the "Tone It Up Girls" from California. They have some quick videos on their website and some good recipes. Their link is on the right side of my page as their picture.

I cannot wait for more to come! Day 1 was a success and Day 2 will start tomorrow - that's all I can honestly say about it right now!

HGTV Design Star?!

While these are not the final pictures of the apartment, in the midst of my writers block, I thought it would be nice to show how Jenn, Caitlin and I have made our apartment into a lake/coastal cottage. All of us are from the East Coast. We have all grown up on some form of water; the ocean, a river, a lake or a bay. We wanted the main floor of the townhouse to become a relaxing spot that made it more like a home!
We have put a lot more work into the space since these photos. Updated pictures will come within the next week but here are a few to show our initial work (before and half-after!) Enjoy!

I LOVE My Hair! I LOVE This Day! I LOVE My Church!

I am incredibly entertained by that girl on YouTube with her "Affirmations"! Yes, it is something to enjoy and laugh at, but today I'm seriously debating standing on top of my sink when I get home and trying the cheer/dance with all of the things "I love!"

I had a great morning yoga session because my hair looked too good to run! So... I love my ROOM! I love my HAIR! I love my YOGA dvd!
Then I ate a wonderful breakfast with some new super tasty coffee, so obviously, love.

The drive to work was gorgeous! God used His sky for a watercolor masterpiece (not to mention the weather was perfect so I could have the windows down and I DID NOT care what my hair looked like when I arrived at work)
I love my CLEMSON! I love this WEATHER! And I burned a new Cd for my car so I'm just rockin' out to my current personal soundtrack.

To add to this wonderful day, I got a NEW job yesterday! 3 interviews later and I get to do something that I love. I start two Monday's from now - it is a great fit and I will tell you much more as I begin!

Finally, I LOVE MY CHURCH! NewSpring is doing amazing things in the Upstate (and I'm not even giving it the credit it deserves saying that!) Today is the NewSpring Leadership Conference at the Anderson Campus. Francis Chan, Mark Driscoll, Steven Furtick, our pastor Perry Noble, Judah Smith, Jud Wilhite and Andy Stanley are all teaching a full day "focused on leveraging your influence to preach the Gospel"! To make that news even better, for those of us who couldn't join during the day, Andy Stanley is giving a FREE night session!! So... I LOVE MY CHURCH!

More than likely, I can be found this evening on top of my sink, in front of my mirror, loving everything!

It's ALEX'S Birthday!

Happy Birthday Alexandra!! You're 21!

Today my sister turns 21 and she is such an outstanding young lady! I wish I was at home to celebrate for her and with her.
Now, it has been an incredibly great 21 years of having her as my baby sister. We haven't always enjoyed each other's company or even presence, however, after I moved away for school our relationship has changed tremendously.

She is tough and independent. She knows what she likes and is not afraid to express what she does not like. She is intelligent and looks like an exotic model. She has the curly hair everyone is jealous of and the tan to go with it.
She is amazing with kids and is going to be an outstanding teacher!

I keep forgetting how old we are. I remember playing in the sandbox dad built next to our swing set. Our fort in the woods was the coolest place to hang out on our street. We had the greatest driveway of chalk art. Our mornings were consumed with tennis lessons and then practice on the board dad built us for the garage. Wagon races down the driveway were pretty intense after the movie "Cool Runnings." My grilled cheese sandwiches were her favorite. Every summer we spent hours at the community pool hanging out with friends we would never get to see. Bike rides with or without Dad into Quiet Waters are unforgettable. Winter sledding and snow-fort building only got better as we grew older. Lacrosse became life. Her hissy-fits were common if I had a variety show or play. We had an awesome basement for playing "house" or "school" (yes, I did assign real homework!). Neither of us grew much after middle school! We knew how to get to a new volume every time we argued, Dad loved it! Thrift stores became our pirate treasures as we seemed to always find the most outstanding things together. She has a lot of nicknames; "Alex," "Al," "Calex" (thank you mom), "Alexandra Marie!!!" just to name a few. We are always in charge of getting all of the presents from under the Christmas tree and organizing them for the family. We are territorial together. Taegan is her favorite thing, EVER. She likes to text, I like to call.
We are not twins!

Today is Alex's 21st Birthday and I am so lucky to have her as my little sister. God definitely gave me one that would help develop my personality and make me a better person, a better sister!
This needs to be one of the last Birthday's I have to spend away from her...
we're trying to bring her back to the South!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AL! You are AWESOME and I love you and I miss you!

Clemson Commercial!

Most of you know that I'm pretty stuck up when it something involves media communication... I mean it was my thesis and the library supplied me with hours of focus on the subject!

Can I just express HOW thankful and happy I am that Clemson FINALLY created a better Commercial to be aired! Our school has a lot of potential to be within the Top 20 schools in the country and that last commercial said nothing for that ranking!

Go Tigers!
Enjoy!

3 inch Heels For the Short Girl BUT Not For Her Back!

So despite the fact that I don't walk in heels for my full 8-hour day at work my Achilles tendons and lower back HURT! I think I can also associate some of the pain with the fact that my feet do not touch the floor when I sit in my chair, unless I'm on the edge.
I use to be consistent with some great stretches, the roller and workouts to prevent some of the annoying pain, but I found this today and think that it is short, sweet and great!
Relieve Low-Back Pain

Relieve Low-Back Pain

Try these stretches to rid your aching back
By Jim and Phil WhartonPublished 11/02/2006
Thirty-one million Americans struggle with back pain, and due to the repetitive and forceful nature of running, it's no surprise that many of them are runners. People with chronic back pain typically have inflexible muscles down the back side of the body--sound familiar? The stretches below will relax those muscles and increase circulation and range of motion. Do 10 reps of each before and after a run. If the pain is especially acute, stretch, ice the area for 10 minutes, and stretch again.

Single-Leg Pelvic Tilts
1. Lie on your back with knees bent and a rolled towel under your neck. Place your hands behind one knee. If you can't reach your knee, hold the back of your thigh.
2. Bring your knee toward your shoulder. Hold for two seconds, release, and repeat.

Double-Leg Pelvic Tilts
1. Get in the same starting position, but place your hands behind both knees or thighs.
2. Bring both knees toward your shoulders. Hold for two seconds, release, and repeat.

What Are Your 4-Letters?!

YOU didn't really think I was being crass (defined: lacking in refinement/blundering) did you?

Everything below is very IMPORTANT

True Life:

During my senior year of college, we spent an entire week in one course working through our Myers Briggs Typology Indicator test/personality profile. While I thought I knew myself, the test did challenge me with a few of the questions. I was incredibly concerned with my answers, was I answering with full integrity or was I answering with what I thought would be best as an outcome. About an hour later I began totaling my results.

Apparently I am completely, 100%, no doubting, an ENFJ. The test declared that my answers boldly announced my ENFJ-ness. I cannot complain. When I began to read the descriptions and career opportunities for my personality I became a believer.
My suggestion to everyone who has yet to take the test, try it! If you are a student, it is just extra support, a good foundation, for what you are studying and what you hope to be. If you have graduated and you love your job, then keep yourself accountable with your strengths and weakness'. If you are in a relationship, use this to help communicate with your significant other - how you need to be loved and how you can love.

I have never had a bad interview (Thank you Jesus!). I've had a few that I've wanted to disappear from, but none that are embarrassing or bad. I have used my Myers Briggs to refine my "skills" section of my resume, to refresh me before interviews (because I am better at communicating my strengths and how a "weakness" is something that I can "work on") from what I have learned from my ENFJ-ness (by the way, no one has a weakness, you just have things that can improve!)

If you are unhappy with your career or interviewing, use this to motivate and inspire you to relocate a confident YOU! Don't get lost within yourself, I promise EVERYONE will benefit from this test.

While you have to pay for the formal, ridiculously long, test - I have found a wonderful shorter one online that is accurate, just quicker! If you are not a believer scroll down and read mine. If you have spent more than 5 minutes with me then you will scroll back up here and take the linked test... because you'll see how it is ME! Let me know your Myers Briggs!

Do answer all questions to the best of your ability:
Enjoy getting to know you better! Take this opportunity! My results are below!
When you get your result "google search" the 4 letters and then find the
"personalitypage" or "typelogic" -.com

Portrait of an ENFJ - Extraverted iNtuitive Feeling Judging
(Extraverted Feeling with Introverted Intuition)

The Giver

As an ENFJ, you're primary mode of living is focused externally, where you deal with things according to how you feel about them, or how they fit into your personal value system. Your secondary mode is internal, where you take things in primarily via your intuition.

ENFJs are people-focused individuals. They live in the world of people possibilities. More so than any other type, they have excellent people skills. They understand and care about people, and have a special talent for bringing out the best in others. ENFJ's main interest in life is giving love, support, and a good time to other people. They are focused on understanding, supporting, and encouraging others. They make things happen for people, and get their best personal satisfaction from this.

Because ENFJ's people skills are so extraordinary, they have the ability to make people do exactly what they want them to do. They get under people's skins and get the reactions that they are seeking. ENFJ's motives are usually unselfish, but ENFJs who have developed less than ideally have been known to use their power over people to manipulate them.

ENFJ's are so externally focused that it's especially important for them to spend time alone. This can be difficult for some ENFJs, because they have the tendency to be hard on themselves and turn to dark thoughts when alone. Consequently, ENFJs might avoid being alone, and fill their lives with activities involving other people. ENFJs tend to define their life's direction and priorities according to other people's needs, and may not be aware of their own needs. It's natural to their personality type that they will tend to place other people's needs above their own, but they need to stay aware of their own needs so that they don't sacrifice themselves in their drive to help others.

ENFJ's tend to be more reserved about exposing themselves than other extraverted types. Although they may have strongly-felt beliefs, they're likely to refrain from expressing them if doing so would interfere with bringing out the best in others. Because their strongest interest lies in being a catalyst of change in other people, they're likely to interact with others on their own level, in a chameleon-like manner, rather than as individuals.

Which is not to say that the ENFJ does not have opinions. ENFJs have definite values and opinions which they're able to express clearly and succinctly. These beliefs will be expressed as long as they're not too personal. ENFJ is in many ways expressive and open, but is more focused on being responsive and supportive of others. When faced with a conflict between a strongly-held value and serving another person's need, they are highly likely to value the other person's needs.

The ENFJ may feel quite lonely even when surrounded by people. This feeling of aloneness may be exacerbated by the tendency to not reveal their true selves.
ENFJs. They are fun to be with, and truly understand and love people. They are typically very straight-forward and honest. Usually ENFJs exude a lot of self-confidence, and have a great amount of ability to do many different things. They are generally bright, full of potential, energetic and fast-paced. They are usually good at anything which captures their interest.

ENFJs like for things to be well-organized, and will work hard at maintaining structure and resolving ambiguity. They have a tendency to be fussy, especially with their home environments.

In the work place, ENFJs do well in positions where they deal with people. They are naturals for the social committee. Their uncanny ability to understand people and say just what needs to be said to make them happy makes them naturals for counseling. They enjoy being the center of attention, and do very well in situations where they can inspire and lead others, such as teaching.

ENFJs do not like dealing with impersonal reasoning. They don't understand or appreciate its merit, and will be unhappy in situations where they're forced to deal with logic and facts without any connection to a human element. Living in the world of people possibilities, they enjoy their plans more than their achievements. They get excited about possibilities for the future, but may become easily bored and restless with the present.
ENFJs have a special gift with people, and are basically happy people when they can use that gift to help others. They get their best satisfaction from serving others. Their genuine interest in Humankind and their exceptional intuitive awareness of people makes them able to draw out even the most reserved individuals.

ENFJs have a strong need for close, intimate relationships, and will put forth a lot of effort in creating and maintaining these relationships. They're very loyal and trustworthy once involved in a relationship.

An ENFJ who has not developed their Feeling side may have difficulty making good decisions, and may rely heavily on other people in decision-making processes. If they have not developed their Intuition, they may not be able to see possibilities, and will judge things too quickly based on established value systems or social rules, without really understanding the current situation. An ENFJ who has not found their place in the world is likely to be extremely sensitive to criticism, and to have the tendency to worry excessively and feel guilty. They are also likely to be very manipulative and controling with others.

In general, ENFJs are charming, warm, gracious, creative and diverse individuals with richly developed insights into what makes other people tick. This special ability to see growth potential in others combined with a genuine drive to help people makes the ENFJ a truly valued individual. As giving and caring as the ENFJ is, they need to remember to value their own needs as well as the needs of others.

Wish Everyone Had A Soundtrack Following Them...

Maybe because I love film I have this obsession with music. I have this dream that could easily become annoying but very cool - Everyone has their own personal soundtrack playing around them, an aura. Volume can be controlled. It would just be very honest. Interesting. You would know how that person was feeling before starting a conversation or struggling with understanding their facial expressions!
Okay, I know, odd. However, all of that leads to my late night of unpack and organizing and preparing for my run in the morning. My last "distance" run was successful but the last mile became annoying as I had to keep hitting "next" on my nano because I was not in the mood for the song on shuffle.
I decided to update my Playlist to the one below. This playlist is based on me tonight. Will I like it in the morning, I sure hope so! (Also understand these distance runs are at a lighter pace so I'm not trying to go Rocky style with this music - my soundtrack)
  1. Kings and Queens      30 Seconds to Mars
  2. Waka Waka (Time For Africa)     Shakira
  3. Revelation Song      Phillips, Craig & Dean
  4. Fireflies     Owl City
  5. House of Tom Bombadil     Nickel Creek
  6. Lay 'Em Down     NeedToBreathe
  7. I Run To You     Lady Antebellum
  8. Wavin' Flag (The Celebration Mix)     K'Naan
  9. Your Name High       Hillsong United
  10. With Everything       Hillsong United
  11. Airplanes (Ft. Hayley Williams)     B.o.B.
  12. True Love     Angels & Airwaves
  13. Light Up The Sky     The Afters

OHH Shin Splints!

Train EVERYTHING, that means your feet too!

During high school lacrosse and cross country I suffered from shin splints.
I did my best to ignore them. I attempted to help myself by wearing leggings or knee highs with the uniform, but once I started running in cleats or for longer than 20 minutes my shins would begin to BURN!

In high school you really do not care about preventing injuries, at least taking responsibility for the process of preventative measures. As I've matured through injuries and in life in general, I have become incredibly serious about ways to keep the body in one comfortable condition!

These are some of my tricks that I have picked up over the years that have helped me continue to train and keep me injury free. I do have some mishaps from time to time, but for the most part I truly believe that all of this has become a huge benefit to my health and fitness.

This post is inspired by my roomie Jenn and her 5-finger shoes and my recent "uh-oh" with my knee from a run!
Not only is barefoot training a new excitement for many athlete's, it is outstanding for your muscles from your toes to your back! The training will help develop and strengthen the muscles in your toes, feet, ankles, knees, hips and back. If you aren't into switching from regular running shoes to the barefoot training or 5-finger shoe, immediately after a run take off your shoes and let your feet do the work!

  • Calf raises - an old school workout that can be quickly forgotten but immediately reenacted. Start off doing 10-12 on flat ground, improve to 15-20 and then move to a step so you get a deeper dip.
  • Balancing - start on one foot, hold yourself on the one then switch. It's surprising how many muscles you are actually using!
  • Toe Curls - take a small towel or a dry washcloth and put it flat on the floor, spread out. Step on it with one foot and begin to gather the cloth under your toes. Repeat it 2-4 times. Your muscles in your toes and shins will feel this the first few times you do this!
  • ABC Cursive Style - Since my first ballet class I have pointed my toes to write the alphabet in cursive. Going through all 26 characters once with each point foot is a wonderful workout for your shins!
  • Spider Toes - I'm really not the biggest fan of feet, especially long toes... but this is a great exercise. Find a bunch of tiny objects (or buy a small pack of erasers or something from the dollar store). Placed on the floor, pick up each object, one-by-one, with your toes and place them over towards the other foot. Then repeat the exercise with the other foot!
  • Jumpies - Rowers know this workout way too well. In a squat position spring off of the balls of your feet to about an inch off of the ground and land back on the balls of your feet then center your balance as you drop on your heels. Repeat the jump from the squat 12-15 times with 2 reps.
The purpose of all of this is to prevent injuries to your feet, ankles, Achilles, shins, knees, hips and back! You want to be at the top of your game, your best fitness possible - well it is NOT going to happen if all you do is run or go to the gym and get a "great" set in - PREVENT INJURIES! I can promise you one thing, 5-10 minutes a day with a combination of anything posted above will save hundreds to thousands of dollars and weeks, months or even years that an injury can easily take away from you. Don't be a victim of yourself.

1st Game Tomorrow!

T.I.G.E.Rrrrr.S. Fight Tigers. Fight Tigers. Fight. Fight. Fight!!

In honor of the first game of the year I will have to post in purple and orange! Am I excited, YES! Am I going, No! However, I will try to get back to Clemson as soon as possible in order to catch SOME of the game.

True Life: I need present a serious issue... the Clemson Paw. I have avoided any post about this because I want to be tactful in my approach and as sweet as possible - despite being passionate. Over a year ago I first noticed the "issue." I have seen the "issue" multiple times and unfortunately, I see it almost every morning on multiple cars on my way to work.

Cover your vehicle with ORANGE! Show your Clemson Pride, your Tiger Pride. Get flags, magnets, stickers, whatever you want to show your loyalty to the Tigers - I fully support the spirit! BUT if you're going to support your Tigers, please place the Paw in the CORRECT position/angle on your vehicle! I cannot tell you how annoying it is to see the paw with the hook (which means that it is a Clemson paw) perfectly perpendicular! Or even worse, to see the paw tilted to the 11 o'clock hour!

Let's understand some History: The Tiger Paw logo was introduced at a press conference on July 21, 1970, it was created by John Antonio and developed by Helen Weaver of Henderson Advertising in Greenville, South Carolina, from a mold of a Bengal Tiger in the St. Louis Zoo. The tell-tale hook at the bottom of the paw is a sign that this is the official licensed trademark for the university.

Now, I understand that no where in the history does it say it has to have a 1 o'clock tilt, but COME ON... there is a reason the entire town has them everywhere at that tilt! Plus, don't mess with 40 years of University History! It is painted on roads, buildings, books, diplomas, championship rings, Athletic uniforms and stickers at the 1 o'clock tilt! What makes people think that they can change the tilt?

Please show your Clemson Pride and support by properly using the Paw
Enjoy the game. Enjoy the huge family of Clemson! And... Go Tigers!
